Hugo Schmeisser's Maschinenpistole 18,I first appeared in 1918 during World War 1 and was arguably the first submachine gun used in the frontlines (with the Imperial German Army). It appeared in combat only for a short time just several months before Armistice. Despite the late appearance of the weapon and a relatively quick end to this historic weapon, it left curiosity for manufacturers of what to design for years to come-- a portable weapon with firepower!
