Type 89 Mortar Animation Reel

Range adjusting: clockwise turn = raises trigger group for closer encounters | counter-clockwise turn = lowers trigger group to increase range

The weapon used a trigger-type firing device compared to more common drop n' fire designs

My most exciting personal animation project to date! I have also switched my rendering process and scene setup to the mighty Unreal Engine. :-)
Listed below, I cannot thank these talented artists enough who collaborated with me--truly a special moment to share with the community. As usual, 'Navaro' delivers incredible results in the audio department!

The Type 89 Light Mortar was widely used in the Pacific by Imperial Japanese Army in World War II and boasted devastating short range capabilities. This infantry support weapon was extremely versatile in use; most common ammunition were 50mm high-explosive shells and fragmentation grenades, however it was more than capable of using a wide variety such as smoke and incendiary. Once the Type 89 Mortar was captured by Allied forces, it was initially nicknamed 'Knee Mortar' due to the suggestive shape of the baseplate. Tragic accidents took place with soldiers suffering severe bruises, or worse, broken thighs due to its strong recoil. These reports brought a sudden halt to its erroneous usage and was then understood to fire the weapon by digging its baseplate into soil or solid surfaces.
